Accidents, Illness & Medication

The staff at Kelloe Phoenix Centre will ensure that the greatest amount of care is taken to minimise the risk of accidents but as you are all aware, accidents do happen. Any accident, however small, will be recorded on an accident form and parents/carers will be informed and asked to sign the form when they arrive to pick up their child. Any accident which needs immediate parental contact will be done so immediately. However, if parents/carers cannot be contacted, staff will have parental consent to take the child to the local doctors or hospital, while staff at the nursery continues to try and contact you. It is important to keep us informed of any changes to contact numbers. If your child is unwell and will not be attending nursery, then the Manager must be notified. In the interests of all babies and children, we respectfully ask you NOT to bring your child to nursery if he/she appears unwell as your child may be suffering from a contagious childhood illness which may be transmitted to other children. If a child becomes ill while at nursery, we will contact the parent/carer and request that the child is collected from nursery as soon as possible. If a child has been unwell we recommend an isolation period of 48 hours to ensure that there is no risk of infection to the other children in the nursery. If an accident should occur and medical attention is required we will contact the parent/carer immediately and inform them of the situation. Kelloe Phoenix Centre has a strict policy on the administering of medicines. The medication must be handed directly to the Childcare Manager or Deputy Manager with a medical form which has written permission for nursery staff to administer the medication. Medicine can only be administered, whether short or long term, if prescribed by a doctor. This includes paracetamol medicine such as Calpol. Any medicine must have a prescription label with the child’s name on it. Medicine must be written up on a medicine form indicating the dosage and time it is to be administered. Medicine will be administered with two members of staff present and both are required to check the child’s name, dosage and time to be administered and sign to indicate this has been done. Parents/carers are required to sign to indicate they have been informed of the administration of the medicine. If your child has any allergies, please let us know when you register.

Health & Safety

Kelloe Phoenix Centre considers health and safety an important issue and we uphold the laws accordingly. We promote good hygiene and ensure the safety of children is of the utmost importance at all times. All rooms within the Phoenix Centre have a fire policy and procedure on display. Regular fire drills take place. This is to ensure that the equipment is in full working order and that the staff and the children are proficient in evacuating the building should an emergency occur.

Security & Confidentiality

Kelloe Phoenix Centre operates a strict security and confidentiality policy. We have security monitors, coded doors and a buzzer to restrict entry and movement throughout the Phoenix Centre. Nursery saff will answer the doors as quickly as possible but unfortunately there are times when a small wait is unavoidable. We ask that once entering the building you do not admit anyone into the Phoenix Centre you do or do not know and ensure all doors are firmly closed behind you when entering and leaving the building. All personal details regarding your child/children can only be accessed by staff within the Phoenix Centre and will be kept in a locked filing cabinet. Here in Kelloe Phoenix Centre we have a duty of care to our children and if we have any concerns with regard to their welfare, staff will follow appropriate guidelines. This may entail discussing this with you and referring to other agencies

Meals & Snacks

A healthy eating programme, covering the 5 a day initiative is on offer to all children in the nursery. Milk and fresh fruit are provided daily. The meals/snacks will be freshly prepared and will be well balanced and nutritious. Special diets can be arranged if necessary. Kelloe Phoenix Centre will provide breakfast, lunch and snacks throughout the day. Babies’ bottles, ready made weaning products, and baby juice must be provided by the parents. These will be kept in the fridge so they must be clearly labelled with the child’s name and date. Parents must also provide nappies and wipes for their child. They will be kept in a tray with the child’s name on. When nappies are running out the child’s key person will inform parents.

A labelled bag containing a change of clothing clearly marked with your child’s name should be provided. Extra clothing may be required if children are being potty/toilet trained.
